The only private property on the island of Sainte Marguerite offers guests a heated pool, a private spa, and direct sea access

Villa Le Grand Jardin enjoys a coastal location on the island of Sainte Marguerite, just off the coast of Cannes. A truly exclusive estate, it is the only private property on the island and was formerly the home of royals and nobility such as Louis XIV, the 15th-century Dukes of Guise and – according to legend – Napoleon.

Perhaps unsurprising given its name, this walled estate boasts beautiful and expansive gardens stretching 14,000 square metres, filled with local fauna. Landscaped walkways lined with cypresses, palm trees, and olive and fruit trees lead guests down to the botanic gardens filled with fragrant roses, geraniums and irises. An impressive vegetable garden lends itself to delicious and fresh farm-to-table meals prepared by the chef. And adding a modern touch, unique sculptures are dotted throughout the grounds, including an imposing t-rex and a majestic wild horse.

In one corner of the vast gardens is an organically-filtered heated swimming pool, surrounded by a paved terrace dedicated to outdoor living. The terrace is decked out with sun loungers and day beds for guests to laze in the sun, whilst cocktails and barbecues can be prepared by the chefs in the outdoor kitchen and bar and enjoyed by guests in the shaded lounge or al fresco dining areas.

Alongside the main house is a second pool dedicated to wellness and relaxation, with koi fish and floating water lilies creating a tranquil atmosphere. Enhancing the wellness concept, the villa also offers a full private spa with various treatment rooms, a hammam, a sauna, and a fully-equipped gym.

With the oldest components dating back to the 16th century, there are seven separate buildings making up the 1.4-acre estate. There is a Governer’s House, a turreted fortress tower with a roof terrace, three quaint cottages, a guest house, and a pool house.

The interiors have been carefully restored using sustainable materials such as rock flooring, white and grey marble and natural beige and teak wood floors. Energy-saving measures are in use throughout the property, and a tree will be planted for each night of the guests’ stay; a unique eco-friendly offering.

White walls and high ceilings create a bright and spacious atmosphere, whilst plush furnishings, modern artworks and state-of-the-art décor provide a truly luxurious feel. Guests can relax in a large lounge area or enjoy tastings in the private wine cellar before heading to the spa for a treatment.

Twelve well-appointed bedrooms across the different buildings sleep up to 24 guests, ideal for large groups. Each bedroom has en-suite or private facilities and either balcony or terrace access.

The stunning grounds and beautifully-restored buildings make Villa Le Grand Jardin the perfect setting for a once-in-a-lifetime luxury holiday with loved ones.

Location

Villa Le Grand Jardin is the only private property on the isle of Sainte Marguerite, just off the coast of Cannes on the Cote d’Azur. This car-free island is accessible only by boat or helicopter, adding to its exclusivity.

The island is the largest in the Lérins archipelago at a little under two miles long. It is known for its unspoilt beauty, which has been captured by artists and photographers – including Picasso, Francis Picabia, and Lee Miller – over the years. Just off the coast, the crystal-clear waters have been home to British artist Jason deCaires Taylor’s underwater sculpture garden since 2020.

The island has two excellent restaurants, or guests can take a short boat ride to the mainland to enjoy the delights of cosmopolitan Cannes.

Distances (approx.):
Nearest beach – direct access
