Syros is one of the beautiful Cyclades islands; however, interestingly enough, the architecture on this island is more medieval than Cycladic. Nevertheless, the island’s capital – Ermoupolis – is an elegant city, boasting graceful Venetian mansions, expansive churches, and stunning neoclassical edifices, including the Apollo Theatre or the Town Hall.
The capital is built on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with many pretty houses cascading down to the harbour, which also serves as an important ferry transportation hub in the Aegean. While in the capital, tourists can wander through the narrow streets discovering the city’s charisma. The City Hall surrounding area is ringed with cafes and boasts seating under the swaying palm trees.
Syros has multiple hills that are suitable for hiking. Guests should head to Ano Meria, north of the island, and follow the marked routes for hiking.
The beaches in Syros are mostly formed of rocks and pebbles; however, the most popular beaches are in southern Syros. Some are sandy, some pebbled, but all have amazing crystal clear waters. The most preferred beaches are Galissas, Kini, Poseidonia and Megas Gialos, all with seaside tavernas and beach bars serving traditional food and drink.
Megas Gialos Beach – 2.8 km
Poseidonia Beach – 4.6 km
Galissas Beach – 7.6 km
Ermopoulis – 11.6 km
Kini Beach – 12 km
Ano Meria – 20 km
