Location

Villa Aurora is located in Porto Ercole, a pretty seaside resort. It is one of the most famous resorts in Tuscany and one of the two main towns on Argentario.

The fortresses of La Rocca, Filippo, Santa Carolina and Stella dominate the hillside above the small natural harbour and are reminders of more militant times when the town was controlled by the Spanish in the sixteenth century. Now that Porto Ercole is more associated with pleasure, good food, boats and relaxation (the renowned Pellicano hotel is just outside the town), the profusion of these fortifications takes one by surprise but adds another interesting angle to this incredibly picturesque little port.

The historic centre of Porto Ercole can be reached through the porta of Sienese origin surmounted by a clock tower on which there is a plaque commemorating the great painter, Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, who died in Porto Ercole in 1610.

Porto Ercole has a wonderful buzz during the summer season when the long seaside promenade is filled with the “beau monde” strolling along the streets lined with shops, cafes and restaurants next to the boats anchored in the harbour.

Distances (approx.):
Porto Ercole – 5 minutes’ drive
Cala Galera Marina – 10 minutes’ drive
Nearest beach (La Feniglia) – 12 minutes’ drive
Argentario Golf Resort & Spa – 15 minutes’ drive
Argentario Polo Club – 18 minutes’ drive
Siena – 1 hour, 40 minutes’ drive
Rome – 2 hours’ drive
