St Tropez, located on a peninsula midway between Nice and Marseille on France's Mediterranean coast, is one of Europe’s most popular, fashionable and hedonistic holiday destinations. St Tropez keeps reinventing itself. These days, more than ever, the trend is "back to authenticity," even if this sentiment is somewhat contradicted by the considerable degree of high-tech stylish razzmatazz in evidence.
The best beaches in the area are to be found in neighbouring Ramatuelle – three long miles of scalloped white sand fronted by the Baie de Pampelonne. The season begins in mid-April, a beautiful time of the year when the mimosas – the feathery yellow flowers representative of the south of France – are in bloom.
The beach clubs open in May, and the sea becomes warm enough for swimming towards the end of May or early in June. While many St Tropez veterans consider April and May to be among the most temperate months on the coast, connoisseurs prefer mid-September through to October: Les Voiles de St Tropez, the late September/ early October sailboat regatta which is the gala end-of-season event, attracts a really chic international crowd. Needless to say, this is the place to be in the summer.
