A magnificent 750 acres estate boasting lush gardens and incredible views of the countryside

Borgo Pignano is an 18th century hamlet perched on a hilltop five hundred metres above sea level near Volterra and San Gimignano in Tuscany. The “borgo” (hamlet) comprises the main 18th century Villa, a little 13th century consecrated Church and several restored farmhouses.

The 300 hectares of land surrounding the hamlet are divided into woods, fields, ponds, vegetable gardens and pastures for horses.

The main villa is stunning and immaculate, with a style that crosses effortlessly from historical to contemporary. It is composed of two wings. The western wing looks out towards the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern wing faces the fields and hills that lead to San Gimignano. On the western side, the lawn leads on to the countryside with hills rolling away towards the far horizon. The pool is carved from an ancient limestone quarry and its infinity edge overlooks the woods and hills below Volterra. The eastern wing opens on to a luscious Mediterranean garden with purple, mauve and lavender hues while the northern garden of the property melds into the woods. Spread out on three floors, the main villa boasts 14 elegant bedrooms and suites, several living rooms, a professional kitchen with wine cellars, an extra private kitchen and a medieval banquet room.

There is an internal courtyard and a little tower with a view that extends from Monte Amiata Volcano to the peaks of Corsica on clear days.

Apart from the main villa, the estate boasts apartments situated in the hamlet and lovely restored farmhouses, cottages and maisonettes.

Borgo Pignano

Area

Volterra, known to the ancient Romans as Volaterrae, is one of the finest hilltop towns in Tuscany. It is also only a short distance from Florence (72 kms), Siena (50 kms), Pisa (64 kms), and San Gimignano (29 kms). Idyllically set amidst an evocative landscape of soft rolling hills and lush woodland abruptly defined by barren, deep clay-walled chasms, gullies and ravines, Volterra dominates and divides the Cecina and Era valleys. With its roots in 3000 years of history, it is possible to find traces of Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Rennaissance art and architecture (and more latterly, evidence of it features in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series). View the ancient city walls, museums, and theatres, participate in the summer festivals or sample the gastronomic and wine delights: Volterra is the perfect destination for a culturally rich experience or a peaceful relaxing holiday.
