A masterpiece of Italian architecture

The Villa Emo Capodilista is situated on the hilltop of Montecchia, which is part of the Regional Park of Euganian Hills, 40 kilometres west of Venice and 20 kilometres from Padua and Vicenza. This villa is a masterpiece of Italian architecture and is one of the most original of the Venetian Villas. The villa was originally planned to be a hunting lodge in 1568 by the architect and painter, Dario Varotari, a pupil of Veronese.

The villa is designed as a square that is repeated in the internal distribution of the rooms: four on the ground floor and four on the first floor, connected by a splendid four-flight staircase in a Greek cross formation. Varotari also decorated the rooms and the ground floor loggia in mannerist frescoes with scenes from mythology and the family history. The frescoes in the upper loggia are attributed to Antonio Vassillacchi. The statues surrounding the villa are attributed to the work of the Bonazza family – skilled Venetian sculptors who moved to Padua at the end of the seventeenth century.

Luxurious, comfortable rooms are distributed over three floors and a basement – the villa has two elegant parlours, a dining room for 12, a portico equipped with tables and chairs for 12, and a frescoed loggia on the second floor with a view over the surrounding vineyards.

The basement hosts the garage and the service rooms (kitchen, laundry, service bathrooms).
All the rooms are decorated/frescoed and furnished with original antiques and are well equipped to assure the comfort of our guests.

The kitchen is equipped with six gas stoves, two fridges with freezer, ice machine, machine for making American coffee, an espresso machine, a food processor, a toaster, electric kettle, cutlery, pots and pans.

A cook is available for preparing dinner six days a week and an in-house couple is available for preparing a self-service breakfast seven days a week.

The villa is surrounded by a garden with low hedges and roses, while just beyond the walls there is a private fenced park for the exclusive enjoyment of the guests of the villa. In the park there is also a swimming pool with counter-current swimming and massaging water jets.

The estate produces several excellent wines, which have won prestigious awards throughout the world. Is possible to organize wine tasting in the cellars, and a visit to the farm, the vineyards, and to see the collection of rural tools.

Villa Capodilista

Area

The villa is in La Montecchia's village in the Veneto region, 15 kilometres south of Padua and just 39 kilometres from Venice. It is on the border of the Regional Park of Euganean Hills and within easy reach of the famous historic Palladian villas of Veneto.

The Veneto region has much to offer the visitor. Its ancient cities are rich in history and their magnificent architecture is renowned all over the world. Noble palaces, quiet cloisters and tranquil squares contrast with the bustling streets and their elegant shops selling fine goods and colourful markets offering the local delicacies.

Venice
Venice (only 39 kilometres from Montecchia) is a lively city, with local and international art and cultural events. These include the Biennale – the international exhibition of modern art – and the Premio Campiello – the annual literary prize. Every year, the Palazzo Grassi hosts some of the most beautiful exhibitions, and in the heart of the city – St Mark’s Square – the Museo Correr displays fine art and paintings.

Every July, a religious feast, il Redentore (The Redeemer), takes place and the lagoon is a festival of boats, lanterns and fireworks, showing the celebratory side of Venice. This is even further in evidence with the annual Carnival, one of the biggest celebrations in Italy when people wear elaborate masks and go to masquerade balls. The historical regatta, that takes place on the first Sunday in September, is a colourful parade of boats followed by races and finally, the crowning of the best crew.

Padua
This old University town which is only 15 kilometres from La Montecchia, is one of the liveliest in northern Italy. It is rich in art and architecture, with two particularly outstanding sights: the Scrovegni chapel which is renowned for its Giotto’s frescoes and the Basilica di Sant’Antonio. Elegant shops and cafés from the turn of the century nestle in medieval and Renaissance buildings of exquisite beauty.

Verona
Less than an hour’s drive from Montecchia, Verona is one of northern Italy’s most alluring cities, set as it is within the bends of the River Adige. Stylish shops and cafés are found amid the impressive remains of Roman monuments and palaces built of rosso di Verona, the local pink-tinged limestone. Be sure not to miss the Giardino Giusti, one of Italy’s finest Renaissance gardens.

The Venetian Villas
The most famous of these, such as La Baodoera, La Malcontenta, Villa Barbaro at Maser and Villa Emo at Fanzolo, were designed by Andrea Palladio who combined the classical proportions of antiquity with the ground plans of the traditional Venetian palaces. The most outstanding among them are all easily accessible from La Montecchia.

NEARBY
Food: One of best restaurants in the area is found in the estate of Montecchia. It was awarded a Michelin star and is run by the Alajmo family, who also own the Le Calandre restaurant and the famous restaurant and Caffé Quadri in St Mark’s square in Venice. As the area has plenty of very good restaurants and trattorias, we have prepared a selected list of the places where to eat that can be found in the “House Book” (please see list attached).
Train: the closest train station is Montegrotto Terme (train station Terme Euganee), 10 km from the villa.
Air: the closest airport is Venice, 60 km from the villa.
Heli-pad: Private helicopters can land in a field beside the house.
