Villa Thandawena is an extraordinary contemporary lodge set atop the southern foothills of the Great African Rift Valley. The villa’s exteriors are thoughtfully layered across multi-tiered wooden decks designed to showcase the surrounding bush backdrop. A striking infinity swimming pool forms the centrepiece of the outdoor living area, with a built-in Jacuzzi and poolside sun loungers, offering front-row seats to grazing wildlife.

Open-air lounge zones and shaded dining spaces frame the main living areas. A dramatic circular terrace with a central fire pit extends out over the hillside, providing an atmospheric setting for evening gatherings under open skies. To the side of the property, a traditional boma provides the ideal setting for authentic African dining under the stars, accompanied by the sounds of the nocturnal bush.

The villa’s architecture takes inspiration from traditional Zulu culture, subtly incorporating the circular geometry of the Umuzi, the traditional Zulu homestead. Indoors, high ceilings, expansive glass walls, and refined, contemporary interiors create an effortless indoor-outdoor flow. Natural materials, warm earthy tones, and herringbone timber flooring create a homely feel, allowing nature to take centre stage.

The upper level houses the master suite, complete with its own sitting area, study, dressing room, en-suite bathroom with a free-standing tub and a separate double shower, and a private balcony. Four additional ground-floor suites extend along the hillside. Each generously sized bedroom has a lounge space, an en-suite bathroom, and a private covered balcony opening directly toward the bush.
