The Peaceful Island with Breathtaking Caves
The island of Antiparos located in the heart of the Cyclades Islands. It is a summer resort ideal for peaceful and quiet vacations. The island covers an area of 35 square kilometers. The tallest peak is Prophet Elia, which is found in the center of the island. Mainly barren, the earth is volcanic in origin. Endued with sheer natural beauty, the island of Antiparos throbs with golden sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and verdurous landscapes full of cedar trees which captivate sight and soul. Due to its long shape, the island has 57 km of beautiful coasts.
Visitors should not miss the breathtaking cave of Antiparos, known as possibly the oldest cave in Greece, whose arched entrance is guarded by the picturesque 18th-century church of Agios loannis Spiliotis (St John of the Cave). An enormous stalagmite at the entrance is the oldest in Europe and is estimated to be 45 million years old. On descending the 411 steps towards the heart of the cave, more than a 100 metres deep, visitors face a truly breathtaking spectacle at each turn. All around there are spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites. During the Russian occupation of 1770-74, Russian officers cut off many stalactites that can be seen today at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
The village of Antiparos offers stunning views. The stone paved broad streets, the white washed alleys, the flowered houses and the commodious square with the eucalyptus compose a beautiful icon.
