A private paradise offering unparalleled privacy and luxury
Located just off the east coast of Tanzania, the exclusive Thanda Island is one of the world’s most private and luxurious getaways, a heavenly marine reserve with infinite opportunities for relaxation and entertainment, and with plenty of fabulous things to discover.
Voted 2016’s World’s Leading Exclusive Private Island by the World Travel Awards, Thanda Island is the fruition of a decade’s worth of work, now inviting its guests to experience a once-in-a-lifetime private island holiday.
An exotic island with tropical greenery, surrounded by the bluest waters, Thanda Island awaits its guests with services and facilities of the most diverse and deluxe nature, including the glass-rim swimming pool and the floodlit tennis court.
With a beach house villa and two traditional Tanzanian bandas, Thanda Island is a heaven of relaxation, romance, elegance, and nostalgia: the perfect summer destination for guests who appreciate privacy and luxury.
The beach house villa is a sumptuous retreat, yet is utterly discreet; a veritable private playground for discerning guests. The luxury villa boasts an ample open plan living and dining area, comfortable yet sophisticated. For guests’ fascination, there is an indoor aquarium that children will admire for hours on end; next, there is a Steinway grand piano, a wine collection, and a cigar humidor for the adults’ delectable pastimes. The villa has the best outdoor facilities for al-fresco entertaining, including a cocktail bar, al-fresco dining area, barbecue, and pizza oven.
The beach house villa features five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, and impressive king-sized beds. However, what makes these bedrooms utterly lavish and unique is their direct access to the silky white sandy beach.
With its two traditional Tanzanian bandas, Thanda Island becomes a nine-bedroom accommodation. Each banda has a king-sized bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and an additional bedroom with two single beds and en-suite bathroom. Each banda is exquisitely designed to offer the best feeling of island living. Featuring locally made furniture and soft furnishings from Mafia Island, in natural tones, each banda is a romantic hideaway for guests who wish to explore a more traditional way of living.
Thanda Island is the picture-perfect Indian Ocean getaway where discreet and unparalleled simplicity meets graceful service brilliance. In this peaceful oasis, guests can enjoy the pleasure and freedom of a completely private escape.

Thanda Island is a heavenly oasis covering eight hectares; it is 350 metres wide and has a 1.1 kilometre circumference. The island is part of Tanzania’s Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve, and is surrounded by coral reefs, which shelter it from stormy waters.
Reaching the island is easy; guests only need to arrive to the international airport at Dar es Salaam, then they can either enjoy a helicopter ride straight to the island or a private charter flight to Mafia Island, where a boat will take them to the island.
Although secluded on a small private island, guests have a host of activities to keep them excited and entertained. From relaxed dining on the beach to more exhilarating water sports, everything has been created for guests’ ultimate indulgence.
A full team of staff will ensure that every activity on the island will not only be of the top quality, but will also be safe and entertaining. The executive chef can prepare upscale meals for guest to enjoy on the beach or on an Arab dhow. Guests can also enjoy a professional massage on the beach side.
If more exploratory activities are preferred, guests can go out cruising around the island, or embark on a fishing adventure on the fully equipped 28-foot reed runner cat deep-sea boat.
The more audacious of guests can explore the underwaters too with an incredible diving experience near Chole Bay in the Mafia Island Marine Par, the largest marine protected area, or go swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear tropical waters surrounding Thanda Island. A once-in-a-lifetime experience would be a swim with the gentle giants, anytime from October to February, when the whale sharks congregate just south of Thanda Island.
Other water sports that guests can engage in are sailing, paddling and kayaking, all possible thanks to the equipment with which Thanda Island is fitted.
A tailor-made Tanzanian adventure will allow guests to explore the spice fields of Zanzibar Island, or Africa’s largest game reserve and World Heritage Site Selous Game Park, both only an hour’s flight away.
