Villa Cetinale

An aristocratic luxury villa with private swimming pool and tennis court

Villa Cetinale is a 17th-century villa in the Ancaiano district near Siena, Italy. Designed by the architect Carlo Fontana in the Roman baroque style, the villa was built in 1680 by Cardinal Flavio Chigi for Pope Alexander VII – Fabio Chigi. The property is located five kilometres from the town of Sovicille.

The villa’s extensive gardens are renowned for their beauty – reputed to be amongst the most beautiful in Italy. Guests can take a dip in the large swimming pool, relax in the outdoor living areas, or enjoy an al fresco feast at the outdoor dining tables.

Indoors, guests are welcomed via an impressive entrance hall with high ceilings and traditional artworks decorating the walls. There are various lounge areas with fireplaces for relaxing, a loggia with marble dining tables, along with a separate dining room with spectacular high ceilings and wall frescoes.

Guests of all ages will be kept entertained with a games room featuring a pool table, table football, a PlayStation and more. There’s also a cinema room, ideal for enjoying a night in with a film.

There are also two well-equipped kitchens perfect for cooking up a feast, or enjoying a casual breakfast.

Guests are accommodated in 13 bedrooms throughout the property. There are seven double bedrooms, two twin rooms, one single room, and a dedicated children's bedroom with four small single beds.

With its extensive grounds, opulent interiors, and luxurious facilities, Villa Cetinale is the perfect choice for a Tuscan escape with loved ones.

Villa Cetinale

Villa Cetinale is ideally situated for sightseeing, shopping, eating out or just relaxing in the beautiful Tuscan landscape, an area brimming with beauty, history and culture. Three examples nearby are San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and Siena. San Gimignano (44 kilometres away) is famous for its 14 towers (originally there were 72), erected as a symbol of the wealth and power of the merchant families who lived there. The city became one of the sites protected by UNESCO in 1990. Between 1212 and 1219, Monterriggioni, a tiny but exquisite medieval walled town, was built by the Sienese to guard them in their war against Florence. Monterriggioni has some of the best-preserved walls in Italy and was referred to in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. More recently, the town featured in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed.

Siena, just 14 kilometres away, is another popular city for tourists: see the Piazza del Campo, the Duomo, Palazzo Comunale and the Torre del Mangia, all of which attract visitors from around the world. Most famous, though, is the Palio bare-back horse race that takes place on 2 July and 16 August every year – a whirlwind event that is held in the central piazza, with packed crowds, multi-coloured flags representing the riders’ home team and the post-event celebrations – this is life at its most passionate. In the town you will find wonderful restaurants, fun shops, and beautiful architecture

Florence (1 hour away) with its incredible architecture, bridges, galleries, and museums is not to be missed.

Many fascinating local excursions can be made to places such as the little-known but beautiful Romanesque cloister at Torri, the working monastery at Monte Oliveto, or the ruined Cistercian abbey at San Galgano. Visit the unpolluted river Merse, in the hills above Brenna, with many beautiful swimming spots. The coast is about one hour away, and one can visit islands such as Elba, Giglio and Giannutri.
